Robert Rauschenberg, RIP

Last night Robert Rauschenberg passed away. Rauschenberg’s work (which can be seen in pretty much every major art museum) has been an incredible influence on my life since the day I first saw it.

I am honored to have been a working and showing artist while one of my all time artistic idols was also one. His legacy is monumental and will live on in my work and the work of thousands of artists he inspired.

New Painting | New Computer

I’ve begun a new painting that I’m pretty happy with so far. It wont be strikingly similar to the avalost series but it is using what I was doing there as a jump off point. I’ll post some pictures of it when it’s a little further along.

As of April 11 my cd The Fog of Forward has yeilded 459 listens, 59 downloads and 2 4/5 star reviews on Jamendo.com. Not bad. I’ve been listening to a lot of music on the site. I love creative commons!

In other news, I finally built a new computer. The one obstacle that has kept me from attaining the title of “total nerd” has been the fact that I had never build my own computer from scratch. I can now say that I have. My brother, Tyler, helped me pick out the best parts for the best prices on new egg and I’ve ended up with a pretty smokin’ machine. A few gems from the system include: GeForce 8800GTS 320 MB PCI-express video card, 2.6 Ghz dual core AMD 64 processor and 4 freakin gigs of ram.

Playing Half Life 2, Bioshock, and Team Fortress 2 on maxed setting is amazing.
Yum.

The Fog of Forward

I decided it was about time to put together a collection of some of my music. It’s been about four years since I’ve done that. In the last few months it’s been tough for me to work on anything new musically and I decided to gather up some of my favorite songs that I’ve made over the last few years into an album. It’s called The Fog of Forward and available for digital download or streaming through Jamendo.com under a Creative Commons license.

The Fog of Forward

I’ve also opened a music page on this wordpress site where you can stream the whole thing in a music player.Over the next few weeks I’ll be putting together some more collections of songs from the past few years into various albums. My hope is that organizing the work this way will help me get the motivation I need to work on new music. If you’re into electronic music give it a listen.

In other news. Nat’s back from Florida. Cory is happy. =)

Six of my paper paintings that were in the Avalost show have gone missing. I am including in this post pictures of them from the show. If anyone has any information about where these may be, or has them, please get in contact with me ASAP. No questions asked. I really would just like to have them back.

Thank you.

Body Worlds and a Little Night Music

tyler1.jpgMy brother came to visit this week and it was awesome. He brought his girlfriend Andrea down also. We all helped Gilah Press + Design package some products the night he got here which was a good way to unwind for him I’m sure after a long day of driving. There was pizza, wine and beer so no one was complaining. =)

The highlight of Tylers visit though was our trip down to the Maryland Science Center to see Body Worlds 2. (http://www.bodyworlds.com) For anyone who hasn’t taken the time to go see this I strongly suggest going asap. It’s among the most fascinating things I’ve had the opportunity to see. It felt a little like I was millions of years in the future and at a “Human” exhibit, the way we go to dinosaur exhibits today.

After spending time with Tyler (who bought me Smash Bros. Brawl, which we played while he was here) he headed home and me and Nat went out. It was friday evening and Nat had gotten tickets to go see “A Little Night Music” at Centestage. There was waltz dancing lessons before hand in the main lobby. Me and Nat will definately need more practice because we were stepping all over each other, but it was fun. The play afterwards was great too.

The next night we headed back to Centerstage to see a Yuri Lane perform “From Tel Aviv to Ramallah - a beatbox journey”. This was very very awesome, and I recommend seeing him perform.

Here’s a clip of him performing the beatbox play at Dickinson College in February.

Self Portrait 2008
Every year I do one self portrait. This years was the first one that was more than a painting of my face. I came away from my yearly self portrait exercise feeling relieved, and honestly, a little frightened. This thing is down right morbid looking. It has inspired me to make a few more figurative works, and I’ll soon be starting a few new full figure paintings.

I’ve felt great lately. Between having my opening and getting professional massages with Nat last week, things have been pretty good.

Hell, I even got a rank of 1337 in Mario Strikers Charged. If that doesn’t put any game lover in a good mood I don’t know what will.

And, a quick rundown of other things:
-professional massages are amazing, despite the expensive price tag
-Nine Inch Nails’ new 36 track release Ghosts I-IV is awesome
-(job related) Academic Calendaring software is the bane of my existence (especially when it works flawlessly one moment, and the next stops working in a way that makes me think it’s mocking us)
-A new server opened in World of Warcraft and I started a Priest there. Yes, I still love this game even after 3 1/2 years.

Next post will have a progress photo of a new figure painting. Till then,
-Cory

I met Nathalie when I was 18…

and we began our adventure together when I was 19. Now I am 23, out of school and struggling to find time to paint. Its been a great four years with this interesting girl (who will laugh so loud sometimes it’ll startle me even when I’m DOWNSTAIRS). We only have one more year left before we have to start our anniversary counter over again, because of course, next February is the last one we’ll ever have as a non married couple. Oo la la.

To celebrate this one we were going to get massages but the place had to postpone our appointment until today due to a personal emergency. I hope everything is OK for them.

I’ve begun updating my work on this page. Above this post (if you’re not reading from an RSS) you’ll see some new links to my portfolio. I’m working on posting paintings and drawings from 2004 - present. They are not all photographed (and certainly not all good) but I hope to have a decent amount up there soon. I, personally, love seeing artist portfolio’s over the course of 5-10 years and catch the little things that stay, or inevitably influence the rest of that persons career. It’s always nice to see a history of work.

Also, yesterday I was featured as the Artist of the Day at http://artistoftheday.blogspot.com/. Check it out, peruse the rest of the featured artists, or submit work of your own.

I’ll leave you today with a goofy as all hell video from November of 2006 of me and Nathalie doing something we love: gaming. (aww)

The Opening…

went well. Thank you everyone who came out to support me and the work. Dave and Mom helped cater the event and even brought a fountain. You read that right, a fountain! It flowed with punch. (you can see a few photos from the opening on Nathalies flickr page)

I can finally relax. I’m taking the night off from real life and spending it doing something I love: gaming. I don’t have as much time as I use to (or energy) to spend playing my favorite games anymore. Tonight, however, I’m spending in some digital world full of adventure, danger and excitement! Which one will I choose? Azeroth? City 17? Aperture Science Labs? Maybe a little of all of them!

Oh, and rent Across the Universe. It is great. It even has my favorite Beatles song in it: I’ve Just Seen a Face! I’ve embedded it below. The song starts at 1:47. Enjoy!
